Activities that marked Good Friday turned tragic in Cross River State as ‘angry’ flood swept away a Catholic Church worshipper, Elizabeth Awhobiwom Ukah.
The lifeless body of the 23-year-old student of Federal Nursing Science College, Calabar, Cross River, was found in a drainage surrounded by heaps.
The Parishioner of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Big-Qua Town, Calabar of Cross River State, had last week (Good Friday) after taking part at the Station of the Cross, went home, but was carried away by flood at Eastern Secondary School, close to Ika-Ika Oqua Market, Calabar Municipality.
Later, the body was found in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, along Musaha Umoh Okon Street, Ekpo Abasi area of Calabar South Local Government of Cross River State, but was not immediately identified.
Residents alerted authorities after noticing the body, which was initially found faced down.
Upon arrival, men of the Nigeria Police Force turned the body face up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the d3ath.
Journalist Agba Jalingo, who identified the deceased in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 23, said she was suspected to have been swept away by flood, while returning home after attending Good Friday mass and taking part in the stations of the Cross at Holy Family Catholic Church Big-Qua Town by Eastern Secondary School, close to Marian Market, Calabar.
Meanwhile, the corpse of Ukah who hailed from Ohong community in Obudu Local Government Area of the state had been taken to her hometown for burial.
