A 15-year-old student of Ambassador College, Otta in Ogun State Nigeria has emerged as “MATHEMATICS QUEEN” for her outstanding performance in the National Olympiads Competition.

Miss Faith Odunsi solved 19 Mathematics questions in 60 seconds, became the best girl in mathematics competition and was crowned by the national mathematics centre of Nigeria (NMC).

    .

Twenty six students of both senior and junior secondary Schools across the country were also given awards in different categories in mathematics science.

Odunsi who represented Nigeria at the Global Mathematics Competition, beats China, United States of America, United Kingdom and others became the world best Mathematics student.

Represented by Prof. Peter Onumanyi, Deputy Director, NMC, Onah said that the centre, would continue to strive to deliver on its mandate and encouraged the awardees not to lose interest in mathematical sciences.

According to him, the idea is to catch them young; to catch the children young, teach them to understand mathematics so that mathematics will not die with the elderly ones who are now weak.

“Let the younger ones continue to do well in mathematics, It is the responsibility of the centre to identify and encourage young talents in mathematical sciences and stimulate young Nigerian students’ interest in science subjects.’’

He also said that the centre was committed to encourage activities that would lead to improved teaching and learning of mathematical sciences in schools.

Prof. Onah, however, commended the Mathematics Queen, for distinguishing herself in a subject that is revered by most girls.

The Mathematics queen appreciated the management of the centre for giving them such opportunity while attributing her success to hard work and support from her mathematics teacher.
