    2022 Beijing Olympics: Taylor becomes most decorated Black athlete

    Georgia’s own bobsledding star, Elana Meyers Taylor captured her second Olympic medal of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, and her fifth overall as an Olympian on Saturday.

    Taylor made history becoming the most decorated Black athlete in the history of the Winter Olympics.

    A Douglasville native, she captured the remarkable fifth Olympic medal of her career with a bronze finish in the two-woman bobsled event with her teammate Sylvia Hoffman.

    Taylor and Hoffman came in with a total time after four heats of 4:05.48, about a second-and-a-half behind the German silver medal team. Another German team took gold.

    A silver medal earlier in the Olympics gives Meyers Taylor two in Beijing.

    The achievement was historic in several ways.

    With the five medals, also becomes the most decorated woman to compete in bobsledding at the Winter Games.

    At these Olympics she set the record for oldest American woman to win a medal at the Winter Olympics, as well. She broke her own record Saturday, by five days.

     Norway Leads others in 2022 Beijing Olympics

    Norway broke the record for most gold medals at a single Olympic Winter Games and, most recently.

    Meanwhile, some of the top spots on the medal count ranking are in a tight race for the finish.

    At the 2022 Games there are 109 gold medals in total, up from 102 in Pyeongchang four years ago and a far cry from the 16 on offer at the first Winter Olympics at Chamonix in 1924.

    The United States came to Beijing with the second-most Winter Olympics medals with 305.

    Over 300 medals will be awarded to Olympians participating in the 2022 Winter Games.

    With 15 sports and 109 events, ranging from skiing to bobsledding to figure skating, world-class athletes will go for gold during a two-week global competition on the grandest stage.
