Most 42,000 African migrants in Israel facing a one-month quit notice have vowed to go to jail rather than return to Africa.
The Israeli government had two months ago issued a 90-day notice for thousands of African migrants to leave the country or face imprisonment.
Findings show that the migrants mostly from Sudan and Eritrea have decided to face the punitive measure by Israeli government instead of returing home to face poverty and other forms of adversity biting the continent.
But speaking Wednesday at an event to celebrate the Negev Region held in Dimona, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, said that the flood of illegal migrants from Africa was worse than terrorists in the Sinai Peninsula.
The Israeli PM said that he has recently completed a fence along “more than 200 kilometres of the border with Sinai.”
According to Netanyahu, the border fence constructed along Israel’s border with Egypt is holding back a potential “flood” of illegal migrants from Africa.
“Without the fence, we would be faced with … severe attacks by Sinai terrorists, and something much worse, a flood of illegal migrants from Africa,” Netanyahu said.
