Seven girls died when a boat with 10 occupants capsized in River Gasanya in Gamafoi village of Kafin Hausa Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
It was gathered that the children between the ages of 10 and 12 had left Gafasa village, Kafin Hausa Local Government Area for Gasanya village in Auyo Local Government Area for Maulud (a religious gathering).
The girls, according to the source, were said to have driven the boat parked at River Gasanya themselves in the absence of a craftsman.
Gamafoi village head, Malam Adamu Haruna Gamafoi, who reported the incident to the police said the boat capsized at around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
“A boat capsized with girls numbering about 10. Three (3) were rescued while seven (7) others were reported dead,” said Gamafoi.
He said all the victims were taken to Kafin Hausa General Hospital where seven of them were confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
Spokesperson of the Jigawa State Police Command, ASP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident to the Nigerian Tribune.
The victims were buried on Friday morning.
