The coronavirus pandemic that has ravaged many countries in the world has dealt a devastating blow on two prominent Nigerian families, claiming one life.

Suleiman Achimugu, former managing director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a victim of the pandemic died Monday at 2 a.m.

The death of the 67-year-old who been had underlying medical issues and was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer is the first recorded death from the pandemic in the country.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the death in its update on the virus on Monday.

”Our family is deeply saddened to inform you of the sudden death of our beloved Father, Uncle, Brother and friend. Engr. Suleiman Achimugu (former Md of PPMC),” a statement from the family has stated.

Again, the son of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, has tested positive for COVID-19.

Mr Abubakar made this known via his verified Twitter handle late Sunday evening.

“My son has tested positive to coronavirus. The @NCDCGov (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control) has been duly informed, and he has been moved to Gwagwalada Specialist Teaching Hospital in Abuja for treatment and management. I will appreciate it if you have him in your prayers. Stay safe, coronavirus is real,” he wrote on Twitter.

However, one of Nigeria’s first daughters, who recently returned from the U.K., is in self-isolation because of the coronavirus.

“Earlier today my daughter returned from the UK being among the high burden listed countries of COVID-19,” Aisha Buhari tweeted without naming the daughter.

“Based on the advice of the Hon. Minister Of Health, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and that of [Nigeria Centre for Disease Control], she is on self-isolation, not because she displayed any symptoms of the COVID-19.”
