Suspected thieves specializing in vandalising electricity components have invaded and stolen 12 transformers in Akwa Ibom State.
Menyene Etukudo, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Power Company Ltd, stated this Wednesday during Sensor dinner/award night at NUJ Press Centre, Uyo, said transformers in Ewet Housing Estate and other parts of the state were vandalized in three weeks.
Etukudo, an engineer attributed poor electricity supply in the state to the vandalisation of transformers and other major components, asking the people to be vigilant in stopping criminals from perpetrating the act.
He also announced that of 2,274 villages in Akwa Ibom, 275 villages are linked to the national grid while 255 are not linked, assuring that the state government is working hard to link them.
The Managing Director said if the state government has been given power and authority, the state would be enjoying stable electricity supply.
According to him, “the state delegation approached National Economic Council in December 2019 to ask for autonomy to generate and transmit electricity to the people, but NEC refused to grant us the power.”
Presenting a lecture entitled Politics & Professionalism: The Role of Media, Des Wilson described journalism as a cherished profession based on the pres-requisite entry qualifications into any school and other trainings before one is registered as a member of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Wilson, a professor of Trado-Communication in the Department of Communication Arts, University of Uyo advised journalists to abide professional ethics in their practice for better society.
