Since an NYSC member allegedly hacked to death a young man in Akwa Ibom State, the media space is awash with various reactions.
Miss Chidinma Odume Paschaline, a corps member and a graduate of University of Nigeria, admitted to have allegedly murdered one Akwaowo Japheth on the basis of ‘self-defence’ last Sunday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital.
Days after the murder, a lady identified as one Effiong Laurel Scott (a strange name since no woman or girl from Akwa Ibom bears Effiong) claimed in the viral video that the deceased- Akwaowo Japheth- she described as a ‘serial rapist,’ had his ‘way’ on her some years ago.
But, Cletus Ekpo, Etinan Local Government Chairman Akwa Ibom has warned that his administration would not accept what he described as ‘vague inquest.’
Ekpo said ”It was with shock and sadness that I received the news of the murder of an Etinan son, Akwaowo Japheth, by a certain Paschaline Odume, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
”In my capacity as Executive Chairman of Etinan Local Government Area, I quickly reached out to relevant authorities to verify the authenticity of the report, and it was confirmed as true.
”The suspect’s claim that she acted on self-defense must be thoroughly investigated. Etinan Local Government Council and Etinan people will not accept a vague inquest into the murder.’’
He posited ”The leadership of Etinan Local Government Council must therefore be carried along in the investigation.’’
”My administration will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served in the case.’’
Ekpo recalled ”In the past couple of days, I have noticed some persons alleging that the late Akwaowo Japheth was a rapist. Interestingly, purveyors of the allegations claim the incidents occurred in Etinan.
”I hereby reiterate that my administration condemns and does not condone criminal acts like rape.
”Those allegations must however be proven beyond reasonable doubt.’’
The Etinan boss pointed out ‘’My administration aligns with the anti-rape policy of the Udom Emmanuel administration.’’
The chairman noted ”Etinan is a noble land peopled by noble humans. Anyone who raises allegations must be bold enough to present evidence(s) to relevant authorities.
”I wish to assure Etinan people that justice shall be well served on this matter. Etinan’s identity as an unblemished entity and brain basket of Akwa Ibom State is not threatened.
”I hereby condole with members of the immediate family of the deceased.
”I thank Etinan people for their show of restraint so far. It is my utmost belief that justice shall be well served in this case,’’ he added.
