More than 42 people were killed in floods in central Kenya’s Mai Mahiu area after a dam burst early on Monday.

The East African country is battling downpours and floods.

The governor of Nakuru County, Susan Kihika, confirmed the incident.

“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud. We are working on recovery,” the governor said.

The dam burst near the Rift Valley town of Mai Mahiu, washing away houses and cutting off a road.

Officials have previously said that 76 people had lost their lives in Kenya since March, as heavier than usual rains batter East Africa, compounded by the El Nino weather pattern.

Recall that dozens of people were killed in May 2018 when a dam burst in Solai, also in Nakuru County, during torrential rains and floods.

Kenyan police arrest fleeing Binance CEO, plan to extradite to Nigeria

Meanwhile, the Kenya Police Service arrested fleeing Binance executive Nadeem Anjarawalla, who escaped from custody in Nigeria on Monday.

Indications are rife that the International Police Organisation, INTERPOL, plans to extradite him to Nigeria this week.

A reliable source in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, who preferred anonymity, told DAILY POST on Monday.

“Anjarawalla has been arrested in Kenya by the Kenya Police Service through intelligence by the International Police Organisation. Nigeria has kickstarted talks with INTERPOL about his extradition,” the source said.

Straightnews had reported that Anjarawalla, who escaped lawful custody in Nigeria, was found in Kenya.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukuyede, had in a statement in March, said that the Commission is collaborating with INTERPOL, the US, UK, Northern Ireland and Kenyan authorities to extradite Anjarwalla.

The Commission had slammed a five-count charge bordering on tax evasion, currency speculation and money laundering against Binance Holdings Limited, Tigran Gambaryan and Anjarwalla, the firm’s executives.

EFCC arraigned Binance and the two executives on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Recall that Anjarwalla escaped from custody on March 22 and has been at large since then.
