Soldiers of the 144 Battalion, Asa, Ukwa West council area, Abia State, have arrested two robbery suspects who dispossessed a man of an undisclosed sum of money along Ikot Ekpene road, Aba.
Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the victim whose identity could not be ascertained, had withdrawn money from a new generation bank when the robbery suspects who operated with a motorcycle snatched the bag containing the money from him.
However, luck ran out on the robbers when sympathisers alerted an Army patrol van which was passing through the area. The soldiers pursued and arrested the robbers as they made to escape with the money.
“The man just came out of the bank, but it appears that the robbers were monitoring him. They were moving about with their motorcycle, but as soon as the man came out, they snatched the bag of money and pushed him down.
“They jumped on their motorcycle but we saw some soldiers who were passing through the area and alerted them. They pursued the robbers and arrested them,” the eyewitnesses said.
Lt. Col. Mathias Amatso, commanding Officer, 144 Battalion, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said they came from Imo State and have been handed over to the police in the State.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Anthony Ogbizi, proved abortive as he failed to take repeated calls to his mobile number.
