The Akwa Ibom Police Command has dismantled a militant syndicate and uncovered an illegal gun-manufacturing factory in the State.

The operation, which followed a series of intelligence-led raids, led to the arrest of several suspects and recovery of locally fabricated weapons and tools used in arms production.

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, stated this on Tuesday in Uyo while addressing the press on recent operational breakthroughs at Akwa Ibom Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia in Uyo.

Azare said the successes, recorded from the creeks of Mbo Local Government Area to Uyo metropolis, were achieved through proactive intelligence gathering, patrols, and collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders.

On the crackdown on militants, the CP said: “On 3rd November 2025, at about 1145hrs, operatives of the Command, in collaboration with Marine Hunters, intercepted and arrested one Samuel Geoffrey ‘m’, 27, a native of Atakpere Community in Ekeremo Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

“The suspect confessed to being an active militant involved in sea piracy and kidnapping. He revealed that his rifle was in the custody of one Kingdom Bane ‘m’, the Village Head of Ine Eyoabasi Fishing Village.”

Operatives immediately stormed the village, but the Village Head fled upon sighting security teams. A search of his residence, however, led to the recovery of several items suspected to have been stolen from sea travellers.

Recovered items are speed boats, power heads, four gear boxes, four propellers, four engine covers, one Snow Sea deep freezer, and three generators, three brand-new toilet seats, two new toilet sinks, one sewing machine and various boat parts and accessories.

The Commissioner of Police confirmed that the arrested suspect remains in custody while efforts continue to track down the fleeing Village Head.

On the illegal gun-making factory, Azare said  “Acting on intelligence, police operatives on 24th October 2025 raided an illegal gun manufacturing facility at Ekiti Itam Village, Itu LGA, arresting Aniekan Aniedi ‘m’ (39) and Ubong Udofia ‘m’ (35).”

Items recovered at the facility are three locally fabricated guns, five metal pipes, two iron rods, copper wire,
two flat metal plates (gun butts), one welding machine, one mini electric screwdriver, and one electric filing machine.

He added that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the wider criminal network of armed robbers and cultists linked to the factory.

Azare also highlighted other recent achievements by the Command, including arrests for handling stolen property, unlawful masquerade processions, and cult leadership. Police have also dismantled robbery syndicates, recovered ammunition and cartridges, and made arrests related to burglary, cultism, and other criminal activities.

CP Azare decorates newly promoted officers

In another development, CP Baba Mohammed Azare has decorated 24 newly promoted Senior Police Officers of the Command in a memorable ceremony held at the Command Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia on Tuesday.
Azare emphasised that promotion within the Nigeria Police Force is not a routine exercise but a recognition of “hard work, discipline, dedication to duty and loyalty to the ideals of our noble profession.”
He described the event as a celebration of excellence and a reminder of the greater responsibilities that accompany every elevation in rank.
The Commissioner of Police commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, NPM, PhD, for his unwavering commitment to staff welfare, capacity building, and professional advancement.
He announced that the Force under the leadership of the IGP has consistently prioritized merit, fairness, and competence in the promotion process, he noted that the result is what was witnessed everyday as an inspired, motivated, and better-positioned police force.”
Addressing the newly decorated officers, Azare congratulated them on their promotion, noting that their promotion is a call to greater service, renewed integrity, and a deeper commitment to professionalism.
“As you wear your new ranks, remember that the higher you go, the greater the expectations placed upon you,” he charged them. “The citizens of Akwa Ibom State and indeed Nigeria look up to you to uphold the rule of law, protect lives and property, and continue to demonstrate exemplary leadership.”
The Police Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to the ongoing reforms of the Nigeria Police Force, aimed at strengthening operational efficiency, improving public trust, and ensuring accountability.

He, therefore, urged the newly promoted officers to see their recognition not as the end of a journey, but as the beginning of a greater one, advising them to “be humble, fair, just, and above all, committed to the oath you have sworn to uphold.”
