Controversy trailed the appointment of Professor Antonia Essien as the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) in Akwa Ibom State.
Essien, who is the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) and a Professor of Educational Technology, was appointed after a Senate meeting on November 26, 2025.
From Abak Local Government Area, she took over as acting Vice Chancellor from Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, the substantive VC, whose tenure expired on November 26, 2025.
However, Senate had resisted the appointment following the expiration of the tenure of Professor Ndaeyo in what is seen as an attempt to foist her on the institution.

Straightnews gathered that some senior staffers of the University Senate had advised against the nomination or recommendation of Professor Essien, arguing that it is not one of the statutory duties of the Senate to appoint a Vice Chancellor of Acting VC as it is solely the responsibility of the University Governing Council.
Though some of them did not want their names in print, the University Governing Council of the University is expected to meet next Tuesday to appoint an Acting VC for the institution pending the emergence of a substantive Vice Chancellor.
