Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna has expressed shock that some of the newly recruited teachers in the state could not write their own acceptance letters.
Speaking at a round table discussion on Thursday on governance held in Abuja, El-Rufai said such people did not write their qualifying exams themselves and were therefore unqualified.
“Even some of the new teachers we tried to recruit tried to game the system,” the governor said.
According to him, “We gave those that passed letters of appointments and a plain sheet of paper to write a simple letter of acceptance and some could not. It was clear they didn’t write the tests themselves.”
He expressed the determination of his government to take education in the state to an enviable height, saying “My administration is determined to fix the educational system in Kaduna.”
El-Rufai pointed out, “All their teachers (private schools) have now left to join our government.
“We believe that in five years’ time, private education in Kaduna will be a luxury, rather than a necessity.
Recall the Kaduna state government had sacked more than 20,000 teachers in the state who failed a competency test organised by the government.
In solidarity with the retrenched teachers, Kaduna State Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) embarked on strike on January 8, this year but the government pandered with the union and the strike was called off.
The government assured to recruit 25,000 teachers, pledging to give the retrenched teachers an opportunity to participate in the recruitment exercise of the new ones.
