Akwa Ibom Governor, Umo Eno, sees the rising heavyweight sensation, Moses Itauma as a true Akwa Ibom spirit, and a true Nigerian ambassador.
This followed Itauma’s emphatic technical knockout victory over American boxer Jermaine Franklin in Manchester.
The bout, staged at the iconic Co-op Live Arena on Saturday night, delivered a stunning performance from the 21-year-old British-Nigerian, who continues to cement his reputation as one of boxing’s brightest prospects.
Franklin, who entered the contest unbeaten in 27 fights and widely tipped as favourite, was overwhelmed by Itauma’s speed, precision, and ring intelligence.
The Nigerian-born fighter dominated from the opening bell, sending the American to the canvas in the third round before sealing victory with a devastating left uppercut followed by a crushing right hand. Referee Steve Gray stepped in to halt the contest as Franklin lay sprawled on the canvas.
Itauma, now boasting an unblemished record of 14-0, is rapidly closing in on a world title opportunity, currently ranked among the top contenders in both the WBO and WBA heavyweight divisions.
Reacting to the victory, Governor Eno expressed delight, describing the boxer’s performance as a reflection of the Akwa Ibom spirit.
“Great, I am delighted to hear this. True Akwa Ibom spirit, a true Nigerian ambassador,” the governor stated.
Days before the fight, Itauma, whose father hails from Adoroatabong in Eket Local Government Area and whose mother is Slovak, had fondly reflected on his recent visit to Akwa Ibom.
He praised the state for its peace, warmth, hospitality, and strong sense of community, noting the acceptance he experienced during his stay.
Speaking after his victory, Itauma remained humble despite growing global attention.
“I thought I could win titles, but I didn’t know it would come this soon. I am just a young boy chasing a dream,” he said.
Boxing analysts and pundits have continued to heap praise on the young fighter, highlighting his exceptional footwork, composure, and rare speed for a heavyweight, qualities that many believe could fast-track his ascent to the pinnacle of world boxing.
