A 21year-old who attempted committing suicide in Calabar is said to be responding to treatment at the Cardiotheracicc Ward of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

Bassey Edem, an indigene of Ifiayong Usung in Bakassi LGA was alleged to have drunk caustic soda in a bid to terminate his life after his boss (names withheld) asked him to refund the missing N70,000 from his business.

It was gathered that Edem, a lottery attendant at Idebe Road, in Akpabuyo LGA attempted to kill himself after his boss discovered that he recorded a shortage of N70,000.

A source who pleaded anonymity told Vanguard that the boss had compelled Edem to refund the money or face criminal charges as he was planning to involve the police.

Following the threat, the source said, Edem decided to drink caustic soda in an attempt to end his life because he does not know or have any means to raise that kind of money at once.

The source said: “He became perplexed and frustrated because the lottery business which he was managing for his boss was his only means of survival. But he never knew that his boss will discover the shortage as he was planning to replace the N70,000 gradually before his boss became aware”.
