Senate Summons Army Chief, DSS Boss, IGP Over Killings In Birnin Gwari

The Senate has summoned the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, the Director-General, Department of State Services, DSS, Lawal Daura, and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, to appear before it next week Wednesday over the repeated killings in Birnin-Bwari, Kaduna State.

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, announced this Wednesday, following a point of Order raised by Senator Shehu Sani, APC, Kaduna Central.

Appealing to the conscience of the Senate on the killings in Birnin-Gwari local government area of Kaduna State, Senator Sani said: “On and on, people are being killed and farmers are relocating to the cities due for fear of their lives.”

Meanwhile, Senate Minority leader, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, PDP, Taraba South, yesterday told the Senate that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, ordered the withdrawal of his security detail for criticising him.

Bwacha said policemen attached to him were asked to disembark from his convoy and report at the nearest police station at a spot known for kidnapping.

Contributing to the alarm raised by Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, of a grand plan by the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, to implicate him, using some cultists who have been arrested in Kwara State, Bwacha said the police officers abandoned him on the trip, despite having duly requested their company.

Bwacha said “I came into this chamber this morning (Wednesday) to raise a different matter. When I heard from the president of the Senate of this dangerous plot, I was humbled. Virtually every one of us stands the danger of this sort.

”What we should do is to also behave as if we are in the understanding that the President doesn’t know. Let us also go to him that our democracy is collapsing under his watch.

“On Thursday, I was travelling from Abuja to Jos with policemen I requested legitimately through a route that is notorious for kidnapping and killings. While getting to Jos, the mobile police commander called them and said ‘withdraw from him and go to the nearest police station’. Leave him alone. I stopped and asked, ‘what is the matter’? My simple crime is that I told the media that it is wrong for the IG not to appear before us.

“They told me that they needed to withdraw, that they had the instruction to leave me alone. I stopped there because I was afraid. I decided that let them leave so that they won’t know where I would lodge. So, I left them. They went to the nearest police station, abandoned me there. The next day, I managed to drive back to Abuja in fear.”

Also Wednesday, Senator Kabir Marafa, APC, Zamfara Central, who had been having a running battle with his governor, Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, raised a point of order, and told the Senate that his orderly, disarmed by his superior, was still in detention in Gusau.

But Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood, denied any such withdrawal last night.
