The Environmental Sanitation Court that sat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital Saturday remanded two persons in prison custody for committing various offences bordering on plea of not guilty and contempt of court.

Straightnews gathered that the court adjourned the case of one Isiaka Abdullahi to February 5 and remanded him in prison custody for pleading not guilty to the offence while one lady was remanded in the prison for committing contempt of court.

The court presided over by Magistrate Margaret Ekpedomo convicted 77 persons and made them to pay various sums of money ranging from N3,000-N5,000 over their non-adherrence to the state environmental sanitation exercise held Saturday, January 27.

Magistrate Ekpedomo warned the convicts and offenders to always respect the court, and hoped the conviction would serve as a deterrent to others to always adhere to environmental sanitation day usually observed throughout the state the last Saturady of the month from 7-10 a.m.

Earlier, Offiong Udofe, the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, had commended officials of the ministry for their hardwork which resulted in them apprehending 79 offenders, and stressed the need for synergy between the state government and the local government council in the environmental sanitation exercise.

Udofe, who represented the commissioner of the ministry, Dr. Ini Essien, described today’s exercise as a huge success as most people in the state have complied with the directive of keeping their environments clean.

He emphasised the need for Akwa Ibom people and other residents in the state imbibe the cleanliness culture by keeping their nearby clean to avoid contacting some diseases.
