Contrary to the figures bandied by some Facebook writers on the number of deaths caused by COVID-19, Akwa Ibom State has drastically flattened the death rate curve within the first four months of 2020.

Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel who stated this during a live radio and television in a question-and-answer interview on Saturday dismissed the allegations in some social media that COVID-19 pandemic has silently killed some people in the state.

Emmanuel said official reports from the 42 hospitals and health institutions in the state indicate that 238 deaths were recorded in 2018, 176 in 2019, and 109 in 2020 from January to April, attributing the deaths to natural cause, not coronavirus.

The Governor noted that the state has discharged all the persons who tested positive to coronavirus by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

He acknowledged that the pandemic does not know religion, gender, race and political party, and advised some people to stop playing politics with the virus which has swept across the world.

On an infiltration of some people into the state during the lockdown, he announced that the government has mounted 3G cameras at different borders to monitor the movement of people and to regularly relay such pictures to the COVID-19 Emergency Incident Office, Governor’s Office, and office of the state Commissioner of Police for information and action.
