Ika local government council of Akwa Ibom State has banned sale of land in the area to corporate bodies.
A byelaw enacted by Ika Local government Legislature said village heads or individuals are barred from negotiating or entering into any agreement for the sale of land in the area to corporate bodies without the consent or authority of the council’s chairman.
This was contained in a letter signed by the clerk of the house, Ubong Udoh who is also a legal practitioner.
Udoh who signed the letter for the house leader, Utibe Cletus, also a councilor representing Urban Ward 1 in the area, said infringement of the law will lead to outright revocation of the land agreement.
In another vein, the council legislature has thrown its weight behind the council’s chairman, Mr. Anthony Udousung on the ban of masquerade displays in the area.
This came against the groundswell of attacks that greeted the chairman’s action on the ban of the masquerade displays in the area.
Such masquerades as ekpo, ewa ikang, sakum and ekong, among others have been banned and infringement will attract N500,000.
However, the council has listed conditions for fulfilment for masquerade displays in the area.
According to the letter, one of the conditions is a submission of names of the cultural display to the council’s chairman for scrutiny and approval one week before the outing of the masquerade in the public glare.
