Against the rising wave of insecurity, Akwa Ibom State government has banned the operations of motorcycles and tricycles in Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency of the state effective Friday, March 26.

The constituency comprising Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim and Obot Akara Local Government Areas will experience the ban from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily.

In a press release dated March 25, 2021 and signed by Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, Secretary to State Government said ”The Government of Akwa Ibom State has observed in recent times, an increase in the frequency of criminal activities in  Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency.

”These criminal activities have led to the loss of lives of innocent citizens and security personnel as well as arms and ammunition.

”Perpetrators of these dastardly acts use mainly motor cycles and tricycles to commit these dastardly acts and to escape.’’

Ekuwem observed ”In keeping with its core mandate of protecting the lives and property of our citizens and security personnel, His Excellency the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has directed an immediate ban to be placed on the operations of motor cycles and tricycles in Ikot Ekpene federal constituency, from the hours of 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily, with effect from Friday 26 March 2021.

According to him, ”His Excellency the Governor, thankfully appreciates the committed service of all our law enforcement agencies, and urges them to intensify their security patrol and duties, especially in the vulnerable areas in particular and  the entire  federal  constituency in general.

”The Government also regrets any inconvenience to innocent citizens and residents of the Federal Constituency, urging them to see this painful decision as a necessary step towards safeguarding their lives and property. This ban will stay in place until further notice,’’ he apologised.
