An Akwa Ibom centenarian and the surviving wife of the late Chief Robert U. Umoinyang, the first administrator of the experimental Ikot Ekpene Local Government administration has bid goodbye to this earth.

Aged 109, Madam Mbakwo Umoinyang is said to have died Sunday evening few days to her birthday.

Keresifon Essien, announced this on his Facebook page Tuesday, wrote ”It’s sad to announce the transition of my maternal grandmother, Madam Mbakwo R. U. Umoinyang, the only surviving wife of late chief Robert U. Umoinyang, the first administrator of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Council, being the birthplace of Local Government Administration in British Africa in 1951, when Madam Mbakwo accompanied the husband to the swearing-in ceremony at Ikot Ekpene LGC Secretariat on 11th April, 1951.

Essien who is a sports writer and journalist, said ”Madam Umoinyang gave up the ghost last Sunday evening.”

Recall that in November 2019, a  philanthropist and politician, Mr Ezekiel Nya-Etok put together a birthday party for the centenarian in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

Nyaetok called on Akwa Ibom State government and good-spirited citizens to provide shelter for the ex-first lady, saying “the widow’s neglect by the same society she once served well informed my decision to open an Access Bank account for her to encourage people to contribute towards providing her shelter and a wheelchair.”

Responding while cutting her birthday cake, the centenarian thanked her well-wishers for the care and love shown to her while she is still alive and particularly prayed God for long life for Nya-Etok.
