The immediate past Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Housing, Otuekong Raphael Bassey has bowed to the grim reaper- death.
Bassey was appointed as a Commissioner for Housing by ex-Governor Udom Emmanuel in September 2018 and was reappointed by Governor Umo Eno in July 2023.
The former Commissioner died on Saturday morning with his body allegedly deposited in the morgue of St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua in Uyo Local Government Area.
Our inside source said the ex-Commissioner and a one-time Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area was said to have vomited blood and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Straightnews gathered that the political leader of Nsit Atai had been battling with ailment even when he served in the Udom administration.
‘‘After he was relieved of the Commissionership appointment in February 2025, he went to his village two weeks ago and celebrated with his kinsmen for the healing,’’ a source close to the village told the online newspaper.
Bassey had been a Supervisor under the zero party in the former Ekpe Atai Local Government Area.
He was also a board member in the State Universal Basic Education Board.
He is survived by a wife, a retired Chief Nursing Officer and some children.
