An Akwa Ibom girl, who dreaded road accident and kidnapping, later died in an auto crash on her way to Ebonyi State NYSC orientation, her family revealed.

Grace Afangideh, a prospective Corps member from Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state (?) had boarded a flight from Lagos to Enugu with plan to complete the remaining part of her journey to the camp by road.

Unfortunately, the 25-year-old met her untimely d3ath in the auto crash at Amenu community in Okposi of Ebonyi State on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

The English and Literary Studies graduate of the University of Calabar, was the second daughter of her parents.

Speaking to the Punch, her family described her as a brilliant and determined soul with big dreams.

According to her father, Mr Camillus Afangideh, on Tuesday evening, January 21, 2025, Grace left home to stay closer to the airport.

“She could have travelled by road, but due to fear of accidents and insecurity in the Southeast, she opted for air travel via Lagos to Abakaliki,” he said.

“She could not get a direct flight to Abakaliki because of a problem. Her last option was to land at Enugu Airport and continue by road to Ebonyi.”

Grace boarded a flight from Lagos to Enugu on the morning of January 22.

The flight was smooth, and she arrived safely. But the journey wasn’t over. She still needed to get to Ebonyi to begin her NYSC orientation camp.

Unknown to Grace, who later boarded an Enugu North Mass Transit bus with other corps members, the very thing she feared the most was waiting for her.

“Thirty minutes into the journey, the vehicle she was travelling in collided with another, and she died on the spot,” her father said, his voice trembling with grief.

“Grace always harboured a deep fear of road accidents and kidnapping. She often voiced her concerns, never imagining that her worst fear would be the very thing that claimed her life,” he added.

Straightnews has seen a video of a requiem Mass held in honour of Miss Grace Afanigdeh at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Isheri Olofin in Lagos.

    Friends react

Friends using Facebook have reacted to the demise of Grace.

Faith Dera Ugwoeri wrote on her Facebook timeline ‘‘Fear has torment and once you let it overcome you,the devil takes advantage of that and feed on your fears. This is why we need the Holy Spirit always.

‘‘The Bible say that he has not given us the spirit of fear but of peace and sound mind. As humans we are likely to entertain fear but once it comes, you speak to that fear, you have the power to do that. Take charge over the situation and you see God come through for you.’’

In her Facebook page, Bolatito Osinuga Adefemi penned ‘‘She was already sensing death hovering, it happened to a friend of mine, he went by flight to orientation camp and on getting there he was so grateful for arriving safely, only for him to fall sick and die in the camp , first week of orientation.’’

According to Lily Berry, she must have dreamt about it and became scared.

‘‘When it’s time, it’s time. You cnt increase or decrease it. May we end well,’’ Anate Abdulraheem bemoaned.
