The Akwa Ibom State government is the third state in Nigeria to pay a new Minimum Wage of N80,000 above the N70,000 approved by the Federal Government for its public servants.

The state Commissioner of Information, Mr Ini Ememobong, stated that the N80,000 minimum wage is a reflection that the government is  committed to the welfare of workers.

Already, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on October 16, announced that his government plans to pay workers a minimum wage of N85,000, while Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on October 19, approved the payment of N85,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state civil service.

In a statement signed on Wednesday, October 23 in Uyo, Ememobong explained that Governor Umo Eno had instituted an implementation committee to ensure the smooth operation of the policy.

“The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced that the State Government will pay a new minimum wage of N80,000 for all state government employees.

“To ensure a smooth rollout of this policy, the governor has also constituted an implementation committee, which has been given one month to deliver its report on how the wage increase will be executed,” he stated.

A statement yesterday in Uyo, the state capital, by Information Commissioner Ini Ememobong said the governor has set up an implementation committee, chaired by the Head of Civil Service (HoCS), Effiong Essien, on the new minimum wage includes the following as members:

    • Chairman, State Civil Service Commission
    • Chairman, Local Government Service Commission
    • Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance
    • Permanent Secretary, Department of Establishments
    • Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning
    • Permanent Secretary/Solicitor General, Ministry of Justice
    • Permanent Secretary/Accountant General
    • Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission
    • Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Civil Service
    • Director of Budget
    • State Chairman, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council
    • Secretary, Joint Public Sector Negotiating Council
    • State Chairperson, Nigeria Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State
    • State Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Akwa Ibom State

This comes three months after President Bola Tinubu approved an increase in the minimum wage for Nigerian workers from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
