Implications of the Constitutional Court judgment which found that Parliament failed to hold President Jacob Zuma accountable will form part of the discussions when the National Executive Committee (NEC) meets in January 2018, ANC has hinted.
The African National Congress (ANC) was reacting to the Constitutional Court ruling which stated that Parliament failed to hold Zuma responsible for spending taxpayers’ money upgrading his private Nkandla home.
In a statement issued after the judgment was delivered on Friday, ANC’s Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte said the organisation will study the judgment.
“The ANC will study the judgment and discuss its full implications when the National Executive Committee meets on the 10th January 2018,” Duarte said.
Three opposition parties took the matter to court arguing that Parliament speaker Baleka Mbete should have done more to investigate and possibly start impeachment proceedings against Zuma for the misuse of public funds at his Nkandla homestead and for his failure to implement former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s remedial actions.
The parties sought an order declaring that Mbete failed to put in place all appropriate mechanisms to hold Zuma accountable.
They also were also seeking t an order compelling Mbete to establish a fact finding committee, or any independent body, to investigate Zuma’s conduct and determine whether he is guilty of any offence.
The ruling places pressure on Parliament to act.
