As the conferment of posthumous award on M. K. O. Abiola continues to generate ripple across the country, Akwa Ibom Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Uwemedimo Nwoko said from the point of law, President Muhammadu Buhari was not justified in doing so. This is even as a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Alfa Belgore, a one-time chairman of the National Honours Award Committee, had averred that the award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) cannot be bestowed posthumously, except on soldiers or other servicemen for bravery. Nwoko, who is a graduate of University of Calabar,…
To ensure hitch-free election, the United States of America, USA, says it is interested to monitor the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State. This came as a response to a call from Oba Oluwole Ademolaju, the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers in the state and Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, urging the US to prevent vote-buying during the governorship poll in the state. Mr. John Bray, the US Consul General in Nigeria, stated this at a meeting with the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers held at the palace of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe. Bray said there…

President Muhammadu Buhari has told Nigerians that “religion should be the moral compass for all believers in their public and personal lives.” This is even as he has appealed to ordinary Nigerians to stop glorifying thieves by treating them with disdain for bringing hardships to others. In his Sallah message to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting period, President Muhammadu stressed the need of putting the virtues of Islam into practice beyond the fasting season. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, quoted the President as saying that “if people allow the teachings…
It was a bad day for the two African countries- Morocco and Egypt- playing in the 2018 World Cup in Russia as they were differently battered and soaked in defeats. Morocco lost to Iran by 1-0 while Egypt bowed to the fireworks of Uruaguay by 1-0. Iran won their first match at a World Cup finals since 1998 as Morocco substitute Aziz Bouhaddouz scored an own goal in injury time. Bouhaddouz put the ball into his own net with a diving header at the near post in the 95th minute as Morocco defended a left-wing free-kick. The result was harsh…

The 2018 World Cup opened in spectacular fashion as Russia defied their recent poor form to score five past Saudi Arabia and record the biggest win by the host nation in the opening game of a World Cup since 1934. Stanislav Cherchesov’s team had not won in their past seven matches and had been criticised from all sides, including a series of barbed comments from Russian president Vladimir Putin. But in front of a largely partisan crowd of 78,011 at the Luzhniki Stadium they never looked in danger against a naïve Green Falcons’ side that seemed only too willing to…
Some Nigerians say the Federal Government’s declaration of M. K. O. Abiola as the winner of the June 12 elections looks contradictory to the President Muhammadu Buhari’s glorification of the late General Sani Abacha in the public. Though the then President Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election, Abacha jailed Abiola unconditionally for declaring himself a winner of the June 12 presidential elections while he was the head of state. Recall that during the inglorious era of Abacha, Buhari headed Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), though PTF board, it was alleged, could not account for about N280 billion. In some recent interviews granted…
As the 2019 general elections are drawing near, Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, has sent dangerous signals capable of upturning the political permutations of President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid. Last week, Buhari had declared June 12 as the nation’s Democracy Day to replace May 29 and conferred Grand Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (GCFR) on M. K. O. Abiola, who died on July 7, 1998, and referred to as the presumed winner of the June 12 general elections annulled by the then military junta. Most political analysts had seen the decision as a political magnet to gum the…
