The Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, has signed into law a death penalty on anybody found guilty of banditry, cattle rustling, cultism, or serving as a bandits’ informant. The Governor announced this in a broadcast to the people of the state on Tuesday, August 16. He said “On the 28th of June this year, I assented to the bill on Prohibition and Punishment for Banditry, Cattle Rustling, Cultism, Kidnapping and Other Incidental Offences, 2022. After 20 days being detained in a Correctional Centre, Inibehe Effiong, the jailed human rights lawyer, has sued the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot, over the her refusal to furnish him with his conviction order and copies of court proceedings. Irked by the judge inability to hearken to repeated applications, the lawyer, on Monday, August 17, filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Uyo, praying the court to direct Justice Obot to furnish him with a copy of the July 27 judgement. In a keenly contested election, Deputy President William Ruto has beaten Raila Odinga to become Kenya’s President, the electoral commission chairman has said. He narrowly beat his rival, Odinga, taking 50.4% of the vote. Ruto has served as deputy president for 10 years, but fell out with President Uhuru Kenyatta, who backed Mr Odinga to succeed him. Salman Rushdie, The Satanic Verses author, was taken off a ventilator and could talk Saturday, a day after he was stabbed as he prepared to give a lecture in upstate New York. Casual employees of Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC) are groaning under economic hardships, trauma and depression after years without regularisation as permanent staffers, Straightnews has gathered. A casual employee is a worker engaged on a temporary basis and whose salary does not compare with that of his colleague on a permanent employment. The Village Head of Efen Ibom in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Essien Matthew Odiong is to die by hanging for murder, the State High Court in Uyo ruled Friday. Odiong, who is married to 12 wives with 60 children, was standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, ordering unlawful trial by ordeal, stealing of the motorcycle and murder of the owner, and a member of his community, Udoma Akpan Udo Ubom. A clergyman and two persons in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria’s South South region were jailed by the state High Court, Uyo over fraudulent practices for impersonation. The convicts were found to have impersonated as officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Among the convicts was a clergyman, Rev.
