The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has secured the release of a legal practitioner, Pius Awoke, after he had spent three years in the detention cell of the Department of State Services, DSS. Awoke, who belongs to the Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Branch of the NBA, was arrested and detained since 2021 by DSS operatives on an allegation of terrorism. The Akwa Ibom State Police command says it has rescued a 63-year-old retired Shell Petroleum Company worker, abducted and held hostage by suspected kidnappers. During the rescue operation, the command said one of the suspected kidnappers died, following a gun duel between the rescue team and the suspected hoodlums. Eight internet fraudsters in Akwa Ibom State would serve a jail term of two years each, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Uyo Zonal Command, said. A statement by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Saturday, said they were convicted by Justice Rosemary Oghoghorie of the Federal High Court, Calabar, Cross River State. Nigeria’s total public debt has reached N121.67 trillion within three months, a release by the Debt Management Office (DMO) has said. This figure represents an increase of N24.33 trillion or 24.99 percent from the N97.34 trillion as of December 2023. Nigeria’s public debt profile consists of the federal and sub-national governments’ domestic and external debt stocks — the 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT). The Nigerian Government has issued Reynolds Construction Company, RCC, a seven-day ultimatum to return to the site after failing to complete one kilometre of the 15km East-West Road section from Eleme Junction to Onne Port Junction in Rivers State. The company, it is learnt, that had received more than N40 billion mobilization funds abandoned the project on a flimsy excuse.
