More than 42 people were killed in floods in central Kenya’s Mai Mahiu area after a dam burst early on Monday. The East African country is battling downpours and floods. The governor of Nakuru County, Susan Kihika, confirmed the incident. “Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud. We are working on recovery,” the governor said. The dam burst near the Rift Valley town of Mai Mahiu, washing away houses and cutting off a road. At least, 19 persons were roasted in an auto crash on Okene Bypass on the Okene-Lokoja Highway in Kogi State on Sunday. The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jonas Agwu, stated in Abuja that the crash involved a Dangote Cement truck and a Toyota Hiace bus. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has sued the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited over its “failure to account for and explain the whereabouts of the alleged missing $2.04 billion and N164 billion oil revenues.” This followed the allegations documented in the recently published 2020 audited report by the Auditor-General of the Federation that the NNPC; failed to remit the money into the Federation Account, saying that the money may have been diverted. A 32-year-old software engineer, Chukwudi Anyanwu, has bagged life imprisonment for defiling his neighbour’s 13-year-old minor. The prosecution team, led by Mr Babajide Boye, had stated that the defendant committed the offence on May 27, 2021, on Thomas Animashaun Street, Aguda, Surulere, Lagos. Boye had called three witnesses: the survivor, the survivor’s guardian and a medical doctor. In contrast, the defence called two police officers as witnesses.
