By Akanimo Sampson Arguably, little remains of the once bustling Benin City, the base of the great Benin Kingdom, and the capital of Edo State in Southern Nigeria today. The once-mighty city is currently the main sender place of origin of the socio-economic harassed Nigerians migrating irregularly towards Libya in search of greener pastures in Europe. Without the doubt, the city of Benin was once the capital of the legendary Edo Kingdom of Benin, one of the oldest states in West Africa. It dates back to the 11th century. In a bid to clean up its ugly present situation, the…
By Akanimo Sampson The impeachment of Kogi State Deputy Governor and subsequent swearing in of another has attracted a barrage of condemnation from many Nigerians. A constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Inibehe Effiong, has accused the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Nadir Ajana, of aiding “constitutional vandals’’ to set the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ablaze. According to him, “Ajana swore to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but that constitution has been set ablaze by constitutional vandals in Kogi State, aided by the Chief Judge of the State.’’ Ajana on Monday swore…
By Nestor B. Udoh In my secondary school days, we used to take turns scrambling to read RAY EKPU’s column in the Sunday Chronicle. We would wait expectantly for the newspaper to appear, read the column excitedly and look forward to seeing new English words in his write-ups. The most interesting part is that he coined some of those words. And the mechanical accuracy of his grammar would make you think he may have been an English man in his last incarnation. I still have the first edition of Newswatch magazine he co-founded with the late Dele Giwa, one of the…
Donald Trump referred to impeachment proceedings against him as a “lynching” in a Tuesday morning tweet, sparking condemnation for using such a racially charged word to describe his political predicament. “So some day,” the president wrote, “if a Democrat becomes president and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the president, without due process or fairness or any legal rights. All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here – a lynching. But we will WIN!” The tweet fit with Trump’s history of racist remarks and his strategic use of cruelty, and some saw…
