The Bayelsa Police Command has confirmed recovery of the bodies of the six police officers who drowned on election duty in Southern Ijaw on Saturday.
The police officers who headed to Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State for the bye-election were involved in the boat mishap.
The incident occurred on the eve of the Saturday Senatorial Bye-election holding in two senatorial zones of the state.
The Bayelsa State Police Command, Spokesperson, Asinim Butswat on Sunday confirmed to Channels Television that the bodies of the six officers have been recovered.
“The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday, December 4, 2020, when one of the speedboats conveying eleven Policemen from Yenagoa to Southern Ijaw capsized at Oporoma. Five of the Policemen were rescued immediately, while six were missing,” according to a police statement.
Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, who also condoled with the families of the deceased policemen, said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, on Sunday, that their sudden demise while on national duty was very painful.
INEC had postponed the elections earlier scheduled for October 31, following the #EndSARS protests and other security and environmental challenges.
