Goals from Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante, and Antonio Rudiger earned Chelsea a 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur to move to top of the Premier League on Sunday.
The first goal of the game came in the 49th minute as Silva scored from Alonso’s corner. Kante doubled Chelsea’s lead by a shot from long range that took a massive deflection from Eric Dier and found the bottom corner in the 57th minute. The third and final goal was scored by Rudiger who shot the ball the first time from a cross by Timo Werner.
The emphatic scoreline did not look likely in the first half as the hosts shaded it, but Chelsea took complete control after the break to send out an ominous warning in the title race.
Thiago’s header gave Chelsea the lead in the 49th minute and when substitute Kante’s deflected shot crept past Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris shortly after there was no way back for the hosts.
Rudiger’s late strike was enough to give Chelsea an identical record to Liverpool with the two sides on 13 points from five games, both having scored 12 goals and conceded one.
This was as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a 2-1 home win over Leicester City on Sunday thanks to a controversial penalty and a Danny Welbeck header that put them third in the Premier League despite Jamie Vardy’s 150th goal in his 250th game for the Foxes.
The visitors will feel hard done after a number of key decisions went against them, including the one to award Brighton the penalty that saw them open the scoring in the 35th minute.
A Brighton corner resulted in the ball being headed onto the arm of Leicester defender Jannik Vestergaard and the spot-kick was confirmed by a VAR review despite the replay showing he was being fouled by Neal Maupay.
Meanwhile, David De Gea’s injury-time penalty saved and Lingard’s late goal won the match for Manchester United as they thrashed West Ham 2-1 to join Liverpool on the top.
Said Benrahama opened the scoring for West Ham in the 30th minute as his shot was deflected by Varane and the ball went in the net.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo continued his goal-scoring form to equalize for the Red Devils 5 minutes later. The game was in a deadlock till the last minute when Jesse Lingard, who played for West Ham on loan last season, took the lead with a fantastic shot as he placed the ball in the top right corner in the 89th minute.
The game was not over as West Ham won a penalty in the last minute of injury time and ex-Man United manager David Moyes brought on Mark Noble to take the penalty. David De Gea guessed it and went right away to ensure the win for Manchester United.
After barely winning their first match of the season against Norwich, Arsenal continued its journey to a poor start in the 2021/22 campaign.
However, a delightful free-kick by Arsenal’s new signing saw Arsenal go in front in the 30th minute. That marked the only goal of the match and Arteta continued the winning momentum from the Norwich game. Arsenal wins its 2nd game and now sits at the 12th spot in the table.
Defending Champions Manchester City settled for 1 point after a goalless draw against relentless Southampton.
Manchester City looked to record their 5th straight win in all competitions as they hosted Southampton at the Etihad Stadium in the 2021/22 Premier League season.
They were only able to manage 1 shot on target. They dominated possession as they had 64% of it but they just could not finish. At one point, it looked like Grealish will score the 1st goal and break the deadlock, however, it could not happen.
Liverpool continued their unbeaten run, by defeating Crystal Palace 3-0 to go top of the table.
Sadio Mane scored for the ninth straight time against Crystal Palace and reached 100 goals for Liverpool to set his team on its way to a 3-0 win in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The Senegal forward got to the milestone at Anfield by converting from close range in the 43rd minute after Mohamed Salah’s header from a corner was parried out by Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
