The gory sight of a final-year student of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area beheaded by suspected cultists sent goose pimples down the spines of the students and university community.
The deceased, identified as Abasi-Anyianga Morris, a final-year Computer Science student, was gruesomely murdered by suspected cultists a few weeks after he emerged as the school ambassador with a “Mr. AKSU” title.
Sources stated that his death may not be unconnected with his emergence as the winner of the contest to the surprise of the opposition, forcing an angry cult group to hack him to death.
A close source told Straightnews newspaper that the parents of the deceased living in Anua off Udo Ekpo Mkpo Street, Uyo were grieved when they heard the sad news.
According to him, ‘‘The suspected cultists allegedly made away with head of the deceased thus leaving behind the headless body.’’
‘‘The boy who was an alumnus of Idorenyin Legacy Schools, off Udo Ekpo Mkpo Street, Uyo used to be friendly,’’ anonymous told Straightnews.
However, the state police public spokesman, Odiko MacDon, has assured of a peaceful and orderly atmosphere within and outside the campus as the Commissioner of Police (CP) Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.
The police spokesman said that the late student was hacked to death in the process of trying to refill his generator with fuel.
The Superintendent of Police said that the CP, who had been very miffed over the incident, has deployed what he described as tactical resources to fish out the culprits involved in the dastardly act.
“Our universities are citadels of academic excellence and not hacking grounds. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, is miffed and has ordered a full scale investigation with a mandate to bring perpetrators to book.
“He has also injected human assets for more watertight security within the university campus and its environs,” he said.
