Southampton ended Premier League leaders Everton unbeaten run 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.
The unreplied goals were powered by James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams as Carlo Ancelotti’s men became the final team to lose a match this season.
Everton remain top of the standings with 13 points standings with 13 points and a healthier goal difference than city rivals and reigning champions Liverpool but Southampton
moved up to fifth with their third win in four matches.
“We knew it was a good challenge for us, they came here unbeaten and we didn’t like that feeling. Our confidence was high,” Ward-Prowse told Sky Sports.
“We were aggressive, we believe in what we are doing and we have the quality to go and score goals… This gives us a lot of confidence, we weren’t really troubled we weren’t really troubled.”
Moments before Ward-Prowse’s first league goal since 28 June, Oriol Romeu went close from 30 yards, while, with the score 2-0, Stuart Armstrong beat Pickford but an offside decision meant it did not count.
After Everton were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute, Jannik Vestergaard forced Pickford into a finger-tip save.
Having lost their first two games of this season, Saints are now unbeaten in four, have three clean sheets in their past four matches and are up to fifth in the table.
