The 2014 FIFA World Cup winners Germany will host the European Championship in 2024, while VAR will be implemented in the UEFA Champions League next season, Aleksander Ceferin, UEFA president announced Thursday afternoon.

The European giants last hosted a major tournament in 2006, when they welcomed the world to the FIFA World Cup, and last hosted the European Championship in 1988, when the Netherlands won the trophy.

UEFA confirmed that the German’s bid had beaten the Turkish’ to host the 2024 tournament.

The two European nations went head to head in their bid to host the Euros in six years’ time, but the majority of UEFA’s Executive Committee gave their vote to Germany, as announced.

Meanwhile, Euro 2020 will be the first to be held in 12 cities across 12 European countries.

In addition, UEFA also announced that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in the 2019/20 Champions League campaign, in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, at Euro 2020 and in the 2020/21 edition of the Europa League.
