A total of 994 Nigerians were said to have been deported from Ghana through land border in the last 18 months.
This showed that while 508 Nigerians were sent back in the last six months, 486 were deported in 2018.
Speaking at a forum to receive a Nigerian Professor exiled in Ghana, Augustine Nwagbara, in Abuja Thursday, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman, National Diaspora Commission, in condemning the act, said the continent would suffer if Nigeria decides to treat other nationals in same manner.
“It will not go down well in the continent if Nigeria decides to do what they do to Nigerians over there.
“We demand respect. If a Nigerian commits a crime, you should deal with that particular person rather than generalise issues by punishing those who innocent of the crime,” she stated.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that with the signing of African Free Trade Agreement, AfCFTA, there was need for African countries to be united and work towards promoting bilateral relations.
In his remarks, Prof. Nwagbara stated that he was yet to receive a letter of dismissal from the Ghanaian government.
Stressing that the video circulating his alleged sack was doctored, Nwagbara noted that the entire scenario was to promote xenophobia mainly against Nigerians.
He commended Nigerian High Commission in Nigeria for the timely intervention, admitting that without such, he would have been a dead person.
