In an effort to shed off loads inherited from the previous Udom Emmanuel administration, the Akwa Ibom governor, Pastor Umo Eno on Monday relieved the State Commissioner for Special Duties.
Eno did not state the offence the commissioner committed, but a statement signed by the secretary to the state government, Prince Enobong Uwah, noted that his duties would, from now, be undertaken by the SSG.
Dr. Bassey Bassey Okon who was the Commissioner for Special Duties and Deep Seaport under ex-Governor Udom Emmanuel is a fellow of Nigeria Society of Engineers (FNSE).
An indigene of Itu Local Government Area, he was appointed in March 2022 and in July 2023 after the resignation of Mr. Akan Okon, who gunned for governorship seat under Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Eno brought him back as Commissioner for Special Duties.
Apart from Okon, virtually all the other commissioners that worked with Udom were re-appointed by Eno. It was said that Eno decided to retain them as compensation for the job they did in bringing him to office.
With Monday’s action by the governor, there are emerging signals that having spent one year with Eno, other commissioners brought into the present government from the Udom’s government will also go, to pave the way for fresh nominees.
