The Graduate Students’ Association of Nigeria (GRASA), University of Uyo chapter, has said it will take requisite measures to ensure that the unnecessary elongation of study period for students in the institution is checked.

The newly elected president of the association, Mr Kingdom Samuel Inyang, who gave the assurance Friday during the his swearing-in along with other fresh officials at the university town campus, promised that he would organise town hall meetings in all faculties of the varsity where issues bordering on extension of study periods will be addressed within his one-year tenure in office.

“We will set up town hall meetings where we shall invite stakeholders and students to brainstorm in order to find out the cause of elongation of studies and will do the needful to make sure that we we proffer solutions,” he said.

Inyang, however, appealed to the management of the institution, stakeholders and philanthropists to look at the possibility of building a secretariat for Postgraduate students of the school. He also made a case for the remolding of the Chief (Dr.) Clement Isong’s Hostel which is located in the University’s town campus.

“To enhance the quality of Postgraduate students’ lives on campus, we will respectfully propose the following; the remolding of Chief (Dr.) Clement Isong’s hostel to at least 1,000 bed spaces, with a central common room, a cafeteria, free internet facilities, a well-equipped resource room and an indoor sporting outfit, etc.

“Aside from a finer academic output, remolding this facility will provide for the students a viable economic spot for profitable activities like cafeteria, saloon, printing workshop, etc,” he said.

The president also vowed to be transparent and accountable in his leadership for the best interest of members of the association. He further declared that the financial standing of the body would be left open to all members.

In his address, CEO of AfriAsia Transatlantic Services Nigeria, Mr Iboro Otu, charged the sworn-in officials to exhibit good leadership qualities in the discharge of their duties.

Otu, who spoke on ‘The envisaged positive change: the role of leadership,’ urged members of the association to take advantage of their offices to learn and prepare themselves for bigger leadership positions in the country in future.
