Suspected gunmen have killed a police officer and collected his service rifle in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The slain officer, identified as Sergeant Peter Ikwen, was shot dead in Edgerton Street, Calabar on Saturday, October 29, 2022.
Spokesperson of Cross River State Police Command, SP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said the assailants took the officer’s rifle after killing him.

“I have just gathered that a police sergeant was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the early hours of Saturday and his rifle was taken away by the assailants,” she said.
The PPRO, who condemned the killing of the officer, said that investigation has begun with a view to unravelling those behind the act.
There have been cases on the police in Cross River State in the past.
Straightnews had reported that six policemen in the state were killed in less than a week in March 2021.
Two of the officers were killed in Obubra, in the central part of Cross River.
