House of Representatives Considers a Motion To Review Increase In Minimum Wage

The House of Representatives Thursday, October 12, joined many voices by considering a motion on review of the national minimum wage in order to avert nationwide strike action by organised labour.

The Nigerian government had earlier set up a committee to review the minimum wage for workers. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had said it would review the report of the joint committee on the National Minimum Wage.

Nigerian Labour Congress has demanded an upward push from N18,000 to N56,000 as minimum wage.

Nigeria’s lower chamber resolved to urge President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the minister of labour, Chris Ngige, to commence the process of negotiating an upward review of the current minimum wage rates.

NAIJ.com previously reported that Ngige said FEC would review the report of the joint committee on the National Minimum Wage. Ngige told newsmen in Abuja that the 16-man technical committee on minimum wage and palliatives had submitted its report to the main committee, headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The minister stressed that since the issue of minimum wage was a Constitutional issue, all stakeholders would be involved in the final discussions.
