Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike says if anything happens to Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom, the Federal Government should be held responsible.
Ortom’s convoy was attacked by gunmen who ortom says trailed him to a river bank in Tyo Mu along Makurdi/Gboko road in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday, March 20.
Reacting to the news, Governor Wike, in a statement released by his media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, warned that people should be ready to bury Nigeria if Governor Ortom is killed.
“If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria. If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria,” Wike alerted.
The Governor recalled how the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Major General Jamil Sarham, and All Progressives Congress chieftains had concluded plan to assassinate him during the 2019 general elections.
Governor Wike described as disturbing the growing trend where the life of incumbent governors is brazenly threatened.
Recall that Governor Ortom said his convoy was attacked on Saturday while leaving his farm on Makurdi-Gboko Road.
Ortom, who appeared ruffled while speaking to journalists on Saturday at the Benue People’s House, Makurdi, said armed militia men numbering about 15 advanced quickly towards his convoy with sophisticated weapons but were repelled by his security details.
He said the men, dressed in black, had trailed his convoy from the farm.
The Governor said he had to run for dear life while his security details engaged the bandits who escaped into the nearby bushes.
“I will continue to fight for the truth, equity and justice. Nobody can intimidate me, those after my life will continue to fail as they failed today,” he said.
He said that he would send a petition on attack to The Presidency, to ensure that criminal elements were flushed out of the state.
He also called on the Federal Government to act swiftly by deploying troops to arrest armed militia gangs hiding in the forests between Makurdi and Abinsi to allow peace and tranquility to reign.
