Consequent upon the worsening security situation in Akwa Ibom State, the state government Tuesday imposed curfew in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun communities.
A statement signed by Mr. Charles Udoh, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy said “The enforcement of a curfew in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo local government areas starts from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily.
It further announced, “The use of motorcycles in Ukanafun, Etim Ekpo and Ika local government areas of Akwa Ibom from 6 p.m to 7 a.m daily has been banned.
“The prohibition of the use of motorcycles in Ukanafun, Etim Ekpo and Ika local government areas from 6 p.m and 7 a.m daily.”
According to the release, the restriction of movement of motorcycles in some communities in the state is part of the government effort to curb insecurity in the affected communities.
It noted that government has also prohibited the use of motorcycles in Ikot Ekpene and Eket local government areas from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.
“Government restates the continued ban on the use of motorcycles within Uyo capital city,” the statement said.
“These directives take immediate effect. Offenders will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly. His Excellency, the Governor reiterates his commitment to ensuring continued safety of lives and properties in the State; and urges all law-abiding citizens, residents and visitors to cooperate with security operatives in this pursuit,” the release added.
On Monday, March 12, Governor Udom Emmanuel signed an order proscribing cult activities in the state into law.
In November 2017, Akwa Ibom Police Command had banned the use of motorcycles in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun communities from 6 p.m to 6 a.m.
