The National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo, has returned unopposed for a second term in the office.

The announcement was made at the 7th triennial delegates’ conference 2021 held at Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, Abia State after his main contender, Yusuf Iliyasu, withdrew from the race.
Isiguzo who was first elected at the 6th triennial delegates conference of the union in Abeokuta in 2018 re-emerged as the President of the union for another three years in office.
Isiguzo scored 665 votes from 704 voters accredited for the election, while his opponent, Yusuf Idris polled 15 votes, despite the fact that Idris had earlier stepped down while 22 votes were declared invalid.
The Chairman of the National Credentials Committee, Garba Muhammad declared Isiguzo winner of the election.
Other candidates who returned unopposed were the National Treasurer, Dele Atunbi; National Deputy President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi; National International Auditor, Ladi Emmanuel.
Others are Samuel Dada of LTV, Lagos who emerged unopposed as the National Financial Secretary and Ladi Emmanuel who is now the new National Internal Auditor.
Our correspondent gathered that 6 Zonal Vice Presidents and Zonal Secretaries were also elected at the conference.
A former Ekiti NUJ Secretary/Vice Chairman Ronke Samo of NOA Chapel from Ekiti State was returned as the First female Vice President of B-Zone Southwest, while Abdulrasaq Alege emerged as B-Zone Secretary.

Comrade Opaka Dokubo from Rivers State floored Comrade Nene Affia from Akwa Ibom to clinch the position of Vice President, NUJ Zone F while  Angese John emerged as the zonal secretary.

The election was witnessed by three former NUJ Presidents, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity and the Deputy National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero.

The NUJ 7th triennial national delegates’ conference declared open in Umuahia, Abia State capital, by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Works, Bob Ogu.

The governor thanked the journalists for choosing Abia State for their conference, which he said, was privileged to host.

Isiguzo  said the theme of the conference Media In Times of National Renewal, was to enable journalists to do self-appraisal and chart new direction as well as elect new Central Working Committee (CWC) members.

The Guest Speaker, Mr. Emma Agu, a former Managing Director of Champion Newspapers and currently Managing Consultant of True Vision Newspapers, Gavinta & Associates, Abuja, stressed the need for national renewal, noting that the country has been moving forward and backwards.
