Liverpool and Ajax became the latest teams to make it to the last 16 of this season’s UEFA Champions League following their wins against Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
Liverpool hit 10-man Atletico 2-0 at Anfield with Ajax coming from behind to beat Dortmund 3-1 in Germany. The wins mean the duo joins Bayern Munich and Juventus as the only teams to have confirmed their places in the knockout stage of the competition.
Second-place Dortmund, who had defender Mat Hummels sent off, trails Ajax by six points in Group C with two rounds left. Dortmund is level on points with Sporting Lisbon, which routed Besiktas 4-0 and hosts the German side next on Nov. 24.
In other games, Real Madrid and Inter Milan took control of Group D following wins over Shakhtar Donetsk and Sheriff respectively.
Karim Benzema’s brace ensured the Carlo Ancelotti men emerged 2-0 winners over the Ukrainian side to ensure the Laliga side leads their group by two points from Inter. The Italian champion made it two straight wins over Sheriff, 3-1 away to the champion of Moldova.
Manchester City moved top of Group A following their 4-1 win over Club Brugge after late drama at Leipzig where Paris Saint-Germain drew 2-2.
A PSG team missing the injured Lionel Messi rallied from an early Leipzig surge to lead at halftime through two goals by Georgino Wijnaldum. But PSG dropped points after a stoppage-time penalty by Leipzig substitute Dominik Szoboszlai.
