    Aniefiok Christopher

A 45-year-old man had been sentenced to five years imprisonment for vandalising solar street lights along Barracks Road linking Idung Eka Uyo and Ikot Udo Abia villages in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

The convict, Ukeme Johnson Obonukut, who hails from Ikot Udo Abia, “was in 2025 arrested by vigilant youths while committing the crime, and subsequently handed over to the Police, who arraigned him before a Magistrate Court.”

Obonukut, who was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Ifiok Ubom, in Ukanafun Magistrate Court, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and vandalism in a charge number UKM/11c/2025, was found guilty of committing the crime and consequently sentenced to five years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Magistrate Ubom frowned at the actions of some unpatriotic persons in the habit of engaging in such sharp practices, urging the youths to always engage themselves in worthy ventures to avoid being caught by the long arm of the law.

Some residents of the community commended the ruling, and hoped it would serve as a deterrent to others, lamenting that indiscriminate vandalisation of public assets have been so rife across the state.
