Anaan Language spoken by about two million people in Akwa Ibom State has been approved for study in both primary and secondary schools.
Approved by Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Abuja, the language is approved for study in Abak, Etim Ekpo, Essien Udim, Obot Akara, Oruk Anam, Ika, Ikot Ekpene, and Ukanafun Local Government Areas.
Announcing the approval at Ati Annang Foundation secretariat, Ikot Ekpene, on Saturday, November 7, Dr. (Mrs) Margaret Lawani, the Director, Language Development Centre said the centre received application for approval of orthography for the language three years ago.
Lawani who is the team leader said the centre started development of a curriculum for the study and use of Anaan Language in mostly public space.
She said the team has completed the project but the Joint Consultation is yet to put finishing touches on some aspects of the language.
The team leader, therefore, called on the state government to employ teachers who will teach school children in the various local government areas of the state.
Members of the orthography team include Dr. Garba Gandu, Senior Assistant to the Executive Secretary of NERDC and Director, Curriculum; Dr. (Mrs) Victoria Babalola, Director, Research, NERDC; and Dr. (Mrs) Nekchi Adiele, Director of Research and Head, FCT Coordinating Unit.
Others are Professor (Mrs) Imelda Udoh, University of Uyo; Professor Queen Obinaju, University of Uyo; Professor Ahaziah Umanah, CEO, Redemption Radio, Abak; Dr. Patrick Uko, Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden; Dr. Arnold Udoka, University of Calabar; Dr. Sylva Inyang- Dean, Languages, College of Education, Afaha Nsit and secretary-general of Ati Annang; Mr. Sunny Udom; John Idung and Precious Augustus.
