    NPFL: As Akwa United Survive, Sporting Lagos, Doma United Relegated

    Two privately owned clubs, Sporting Lagos and Doma United have been relegated to the Nigeria National League, NNL, after failing to beat the drop in the 2023/2024 NPFL season. 

    The Lagosians suffered a one-nil loss to Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan in the final league game.

    Meanwhile, Akwa United and Bayelsa United escaped the drop after beating Rivers United and Bendel Insurance respectively in their final league games.

    Akwa United got 49 points while Bayelsa United secured 50 points to remain in the premier circle.

    Doma United were also relegated after a 1-1 home draw with Abia Warriors.

    Thus, Sporting Lagos finished 17th on the table with 46 points from 38 matches, while Doma United were 18th with 44 points.

    Akwa United and Bayelsa United secured their places in the top flight on the back of their final-day wins.

    Akwa United beat Rivers United 3-1, while Bayelsa United were 2-0 winners at Bendel Insurance’s home.

    The four teams that dropped to the lower division include Gombe United, Heartland FC, Sporting Lagos and Doma United.

    However, El-Kanemi Warriors, Nasarawa United, Ikorodu City and Beyond Limits will also be plying their trade in the NPFL next season.

    Also, Remo Stars secured the CAF Champions League ticket while Enyimba FC got the CAF Confederations Cup ticket. The league champions, Rangers International also got the CAF Champions League ticket.

    Abia Warriors and El-Kanemi Warriors will slug it out in the President Federation Cup final to determine the remaining slot for the CAF Confederations Cup.
