The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council has formally inaugurated its Advisory Council, consisting of all past chairmen and secretaries since the inauguration of the union in the state.

At the moment, the state council inaugurated in December 1987 comprises nine past Chairmen and five past secretaries.

The NUJ Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk, who inaugurated the council during the State Congress on Thursday, March 27 said the initiative, as outlined in the NUJ Constitution, recognises the significant contributions of past leaders and aims to improve the governance principles of the State Council.

Etuk underscored the Council’s role as a consultative body that will provide guidance to the union’s leadership and promote unity and development among NUJ members in Akwa Ibom.

He expressed happiness in the formation of the Advisory Council, describing it as the first-of its kind in the state.

The new Advisory Council is made of such notable past chairmen as Mr. Inimfon Udo, the inaugural State Chairman who served between 1988 and 1989, Mr. Etop William (1991–1992), Mr. Ikpong Essien Udom (1993–1995), and Comrade Innocent Okon (1995–1998).

Other members are Mr. Sunday Antai (2000–2003), Comrade Israel Umoh (2004–2007), Elder Ephraim Etti (2007–2010), Comrade Joe Effiong (2010–2013), and Elder Patrick Albert (2013–2019). So far, two past Chairmen – Nnamnso Umoren and Daniel Ekanem- had died.

The past secretaries are Charles Ebong, Sir Godwin Okon, Ime Isuaikoh, Etop Eshiet, and Justice Udousoroh. Other secretaries who served as Secretary and later became Chairmen are the late Daniel Ekanem, Joe Effiong and Amos Etuk.

Comrade Inimfom Udoh is the Chairman of the Council while Comrade Justice Udousoroh is the Secretary.

Meanwhile,, two new chapels—Apex and Redemption FM Chapels—were inaugurated, raising the total number of chapels in the State Council to 18 with more than 800 members. The new chapels were inaugurated alongside their interim Executive Committee members (EXCO).
