One passenger survived while 17 others died in auto crash involving an 18-seater bus belonging to Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC).
AKTC Limited, one of the leading transport companies in Akwa Ibom, was state-owned transport company until Nsit Motors took over the management of the company in which some individual transporters and cooperative bodies feed the company with vehicles.
The passengers who were said to be heading to Akwa Ibom State boarded the wrecked vehicle in Port Harcourt, but died in a section of Ogoni land, Rivers State Friday night, January 20, 2023.
Straightnews gathered that only one passenger – Idorenyin Daniel – survived the ghastly accident while other passengers died.
Idorenyin said she sat in the front seat with the driver, but the driver could not make it.
In an interview with Inspiration FM reporter, Idorenyin narrated that the driver had switched off the headlight for fear of avoiding night marauders along Eleme-Port Harcourt Road.
‘‘Unfortunately, the driver who was on top speed ran into a waiting heavy duty truck on the road. As he hit the parked truck, their bus somersaulted several times, resulting in the death of occupants of the vehicle,’’ Idorenyin stated.
In gory pictures of the accident seen by Straightnews in the internet, most of the dead had severed limbs, broken heads and mangled bodies with household items spread all over the accident scene.
In her Facebook timeline, Idorenyin Daniel with Facebook name, Aidee Daniel, thanked God for such an unbelievable miracle in that she did not die but only sustained minor injury.
On the Facebook, she wrote: ‘‘God is too faithful to fail me
I was at the front sit with the driver
And i came out with a little scratch.
May the souls of the departed REST IN PEACE.
Up till this moment AKTC management can’t even call to know if am safe or not.”
However, Straightnews reporter visited Contact on AKTC website and 08142633953 did not go despite spirited efforts to confirm the sad story.
‘‘Dear customer, please wait your call is being forwarded’’ came response from the telecommunication provider. And the call ended.
