The battle for supremacy among some suspected cultists has assumed a dangerous dimension following the killing of two repentant militants early on Tuesday in Ikpe Annang in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Straightnews reporter gathered that some suspected cultists allegedly killed and beheaded Unyime Ibanga popularly known as Overcomer as well as shot dead one other person in the same compound.

Before he embraced peace in September 2018, Overcomer was declared wanted by Akwa Ibom Police Command.

After the death of Isoakpafid, the leader from Ukanafun, Overcomer from Etim Ekpo was said to be the leader.

It was alleged that the cultists numbering more than 20 were suspected members of Iceland confraternity and were fingered to have come from Port Harcourt to perpetrate the dastardly act.

They were said to have arrived at Overcomer’s compound few minutes past 1 a.m, broke into his house, killed, and beheaded him.

“They also killed one of his security aides in the compound. They left with Overcomer’s head. Though he was alleged to belong to the group, he renounced and laid down his arms for the state government’s amnesty,” an anonymous person said.

A source in the village confided in the online newspapers that the killing may not be unconnected with suspicion that Overcomer a repentant militant, might have been collecting monthly stipends of N500,000 for their upkeep without sharing same to other members in the area and in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Another source told Straightnews that for more than four months, the state government has not paid the repentant militants in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas.

“If the group succeeds in installing their leader in Etim Ekpo, the insecurity in the area and Ukanafun may nosedive. I hope the government will be fast to stop the incoming group as a way of forestalling any impending outbreak of law and order in the area,” a close source told Straightnews.

However, SP Odiko MacDon, Akwa Ibom  Police Public Relations Officer is yet to confirm the story.
